What do you need to do

"A man who represents himself has a fool for a client."
~Abraham Lincoln

The first thing to remember is that this is an adversarial matter. The lender is the one stands to benefit in the event you lose your home. So, it is important to understand that the bank is not really your friend. Asking them for help and advice is akin to a criminal defendant asking the prosecutor how to prepare his defense. Moreover, if you were being sued for an amount equal to the value of your home, would you fight the attorneys suing you by yourself or would you retain an attorney? The gravity of avoiding foreclosure is no less important.
